BDS Student Show

Thank you to everyone who took part in the show last week. We had a good selection of work to show and it created a lot of interest and some great comments. Here are just a few images, I am afraid I was so worried about Ros not falling off the ladder I didn't get photos of it all, but both walls were very impressive.

The Informal Show of work is now on the walls and it looks great, students should be proud of their work, it looks very impressive. I would like to say a huge thank you not only to all the students who have summited work but also to Ros Ford and Sara Easby for helping to put it all up.
There is a diverse and energetic range of work which makes for a fantastic show. Thank you again for all your help, do try and get in to see it and tell your friends, as it is the perfect opportunity to find out what goes on in the different classes. The show is Free with RWA exhibition entry, students who are exhibiting work will be allowed free entry but please sign at the front desk who have a list of artists.

Portal Easels For Sale

We have 10 portable easels for sale in the drawing studio £15 each. Each fold up and have their own black carrying bag and suitable for taking out and about. (They are not suitable for heavyweight studio work.)

Informal BDS Student Show

BV Show at Sidcot Galleries

Tutor Ruth Wallace would like you to know that she has had her work selected for the BV Show at Sidcot Galleries which starts next Saturday and runs until 7th June.

Seven of her drawings have been hung. They are large pieces (126 x 95 cms) and most galleries don't have room to show many in a group show, so this is the first time Ruth has had such a large group from this series exhibited together.

The show will be open Thursdays and Fridays 11am to 6pm and Saturdays 10am to 4pm until 7th June and the address is Sidcot Galleries, Sidcot Arts Centre, Oakridge Lane, Sidcot, Winscombe, North Somerset BS25 1PD.

Anyone is welcome to come to the launch event on Saturday afternoon.

Bristol Drawing School Live Drawing at the Bristol Hippodrome

Following the success of the Russian State Ballet workshop we are running two more events with Sara Easby

We will start at 10.30am for talk in the lounge by tutor Sara Easby

Then we will move to the auditorium to draw from 11-1 pm. There will be a short time back in the lounge to discuss your work with Sara then we will need to exit before the matinee (by 1.15pm)

We will start at 3.30pm for talk in the lounge by tutor Sara Easby

Then we will move to the auditorium to draw from 4-5.30pm. There will be a short time back in the lounge to discuss your work with Sara then we will need to exit before the evening performance (by 6.15pm)

Please note that we have the privilege of drawing artists during rehearsal, so please work as quietly as possible in the auditorium. For this reason Sara is unable to teach whilst you are drawing.

*The times maybe subject to change dependent on any rehearsals and if this is the case we will email you if you are booked on.

Laptop Life Drawing

This term we welcomed Lucy Ward to the Bristol Drawing School with her workshop 'Laptop life Drawing'. Lucy has a fresh way of teaching and there was a real energy and focus in the room, as you can see from the results. Illustration Weekend 15 and 16 February!

Live Drawing Russian State Ballet

We have a last minute opportunity to draw the Russian State Ballet at the Hippodrome next Thursday 23 January 2014. 

Students would be able to arrive at 11.00am, our Drawing School tutor will give some advice and pointers to the class and then start drawing from 11.30-1.15pm, with continued advice from the tutor if appropriate.

You would need to provide your own materials and it would cost around £10-£15 (I need to confirm this with The Hippodrome).

Sara Easby's Costume Workshop December 13

Well there was a fun day for everyone at Sara's costume workshop on 8 December. 

Model Deb Pearson modelled two different dresses supplied by Bristol Old Vic costumes, once worn by Jane Asher. The results speak for themselves see the drawings below.

What has Sara's movement class been up to?

Sara Easby had a fun time with her Life Drawing with Movement class last week. Everyone worked together drawing the model in action as they worked energetically along side each other on the BDS studio wall and the results are impressive!

Meet some of Bristol Drawing School's tutors

Sara Easby is one of the school's well known tutors and artist, she runs the very popular Life Drawing with Movement course each term and runs several workshops such as the Spirit of Drawing, Life Drawing with Movement and a new exciting workshop this Christmas on Costume Drawing. In the early days of the Bristol Drawing School Sara held a very popular two day workshop drawing the circus performers at Circomedia, if we have enough interest this a definitely a workshop we would like to introduce again in the future, if you might be interested in this please email maria.bowers@rwa.org.uk plus we are always keen to hear if there are any other workshops you would like us to programme in.

Ruth Wallace is an artist whose drawn work has often been exhibited at the RWA and was featured in this years 'Drawn' exhibition. Ruth runs our Beginners course and the Intermediate drawing course, so many of our students will be familiar with her and her work. She offers a great range of ideas to develop your drawing skills, and as affirmation of her brilliant tuition it is not surprising that many of her students continue on from Beginners to Intermediate. If you would like to join a workshop with Ruth she is running an Intermediate Drawing 1-day workshop this November.

Autumn Term 2013 Workshops

We have a wonderful variety of workshops this autumn, now in full flow and still time to book you place.

There are many ways to adapt your drawings and use them to explore new techniques, we have four workshops that are perfect for just that. Ros Ford is teaching two Sketch and Print workshops running this term which will help you interpret your drawings into relief prints and drypoint. The wonder of print is the unexpected; the results will always surprise you, the impression of the plate or the ink in the paper gives your work a new dimension.

We also have Jessica Palmer returning with her very popular Paper Cutting Kings and Queens workshop focusing on our Royal Patronage exhibition at the RWA, Jessica is an expert at encouraging experimentation and developing techniques. Join Ros Cuthbert to be inspired in her dynamic Open your Eyes (paint and collage) workshop which will draw ideas from the exciting 161 Annual Open exhibition.

It is wonderful to draw and exciting to see it in new ways, or have new things to see.. which is why we have introduced a brand new workshop with well known tutor Sara Easby who will be teaching what promises to be a perfect pre-christmas Costume Drawing workshop.

Be Inspired

This was a link sent by one of our students, it is an inspiring story of the importance of drawing by tv business journalist Andrew Marr. Although it is written in light of his stroke the sentiment will resonate with many of us Andrew says:

'"When you are doing something that you've got some inclination or talent towards, but which is not easy, and you're therefore completely concentrating on making something – that is, I think, when most people are happiest." For a farmer in touch with nature or a drawer sketching a tree, "there's a dignity and a purpose to life, which you don't get from working in a call centre or being on television."

We have a wide range of inspiring and fascinating workshops this term starting with Botanical Drawing with award winning artist Julia Trickey.

If you have ever been tempted to try life drawing but haven't had the confidence to try one of our drop in classes, then our Introduction to Life Drawing classes will be perfect for you.

For the more experienced then we have a number of less formal life drawing sessions throughout the term, details here.

Other highlights include opportunities to experiment and explore different techniques with our Drawing into Print and Drawing with Mixed Media and Techniques workshops. As well as Watercolour with Jake Winkle.

We are also pleased to welcome back artist Paul Wright with his Portrait in Oils class which was immensely popular last time so don't delay booking.

Another popular and inspiring course is Alan McGowan's Anatomy Drawing a must for anyone interested in drawing the figure.

Bristol Drawing School moves to the RWA!

We are very pleased to announce that from August 2011 the Bristol Drawing School will be based at The Royal West of England Academy www.rwa.org.uk.

This exciting development means we can now offer an expanded programme of courses and workshops making full use of the beautiful surroundings that the RWA can provide.

We hope to see you here at the Royal West of England Academy very soon!
